Culture near Bed and Breakfast Glasgow
Glasgow is home to a vast number of art galleries and stunning pieces of architecture and design. So much so that in 1999, the city was crowned " UK City of Architecture and Design". It is an architectural dream: Victorian red & honey sandstone, Italianate steeples and medieval spires sit harmoniously with towers, the sensuous Art Nouveau and the titanium, glass and steel of the contemporary city. The past and present of our city architecture make an eclectic mix of style and elegance.
The most famous late architects such as Charles Rennie Mackintosh who is internationally renowned, to Alexander 'Greek' Thompson whose boldness in design put the Egyptian look into Glasgow. Lomond Hotel, a bed and breakfast hotel, is only couple miles from the Glasgow City Centre where the McLellan Galleries exhibits Charles Rennie Mackintosh's work. He was a phenomenal designer, artist and architect whose work is well known across the globe. Mackintosh was born and raised in the Townhead area of Glasgow and his work can be seen and fully appreciated at many sites around the city.
Mackintosh was the son of a policeman; his career began when he completed his apprenticeship with a local architect. The beginnings of what would be a magnificent career began when Mackintosh entered, and won, a competition to redesign the Glasgow School of Art.
Charles Rennie Mackintosh was a former pupil of the school, which made it even more significant to him to design a fantastic building, which of course he did. The Glasgow School of Art is still an art school to this day and is worth taking a look at while in the city to fully understand the genius that was Mackintosh.
Through his evening classes at the school of art Mackintosh was able to discover the design techniques at home and abroad even getting a place on a trip to Italy which it seems was extremely inspirational.
Mackintosh continued in his work, continually striving for perfection and creating cutting edge designs all over Glasgow. Although when he first started out Mackintosh was kept within certain boundaries in regard to design and detail but as time went on he began to gain the artistic freedom he so longed for.
Charles Rennie Mackintosh had the chance to design the complete interior and exterior of a tearoom for friend and business associated, Kate Cranston, he went on to design each of her tearooms which were, and still are extremely popular.
There are magnificent buildings all over Glasgow displaying sheer genius, the Kelvingrove Art Galleries, which are currently under refurbishment are a prime example. With all its flamboyant towers, turrets, spires and statues. And with its marvellous exhibits, it's a popular day out - especially on wet weekends!
As well as our architects, our artists are pretty good too, Jack Vettriano has emerged from the unlikely background of an early working life in the Scottish coalfields to become one of Britain's best known contemporary artists; he is entirely self taught. His work first came to public prominence at the Royal Scottish Academy open exhibition in 1988. Since then he has gone from strength to strength with sell out exhibitions in all over the world.
Glasgow is highly renowned as a convivial and happening city with its exciting calendar of events. The city's festivals are vibrant, colourful and entertain thousands of visitors to the 'Friendly City' year in year out.
Live Music and Performing Arts are strongly represented in Glasgow's events calendar, particularly the world-renowned Celtic Connections Festival which takes place at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall and other popular venues every January.
Summer Festivals feature open-air events such as the vivacious West End Festival. Other summer-time cultural and musical events include The Glasgow International Jazz Festival featuring well-known performers in the blues and jazz arena, The Asian Mela Festival, a multicultural festival featuring high profile choreography and music and the World Pipe Band Competition set in the verdant surroundings of Glasgow Green.
Each September Glasgow hosts The Great Scottish Run, one of the largest racing events in the UK where participants can choose to run the half marathon or the 10K. Contestants pass by Glasgow's open spaces, parks and attractions during the course before the finishing line in Glasgow Green.
Whether you are interested in architecture or art, Glasgow will have something for you to enjoy while your visiting.
